Currently providing drug discovery and medicinal chemistry expertise as a freelance consultant, Chaira acted as Head of the Department of Screening Technologies at Siena Biotech from 2008 to 2011. In this role, she oversaw the three main screening, metabolic profiling and analytical chemistry platforms supporting projects targeting neurodegenerative and proliferative diseases, from the initial screening campaign to the selection of preclinical candidates.
Chiara joined Siena Biotech in 2004 as Medicinal Chemistry Unit Head, setting up the laboratories, co-ordinating design and synthesis of small molecules in the CNS area and their optimisation to clinical candidate selection. In her previous role of Group Leader at Evotec, she led several teams supporting external collaborations on various therapeutic areas, including oncology, metabolic and auto-immune diseases, from early structure-activity relationship definition, using solid phase library synthesis and solution-phase parallel chemistry, to molecule optimisation for preclinical development. She started her career at GlaxoSmithKline in 1991 where she worked as a Research Scientist specialising in antibacterial drug discovery until she moved to Evotec in 1998.
