Dr. Willem Smuts Pr.Sci.Nat.
Willem is a geologist with a Masters degree in sedimentology from the University of Port Elizabeth (1987) and a Ph.D. from Pretoria University (1998). He is a registered professional earth scientist with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions and has authored and co-authored over 79 scientific and technical papers.
Willem has 27-years of technical and management experience in the fields of research, exploration, mining and consulting across Africa. Willem started his career at the Geological Survey of South Africa in the Fossil Fuels Division (Assistant Director). During the mid-90’s Willem participated in CBM exploration and evaluation with AMOCO in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana. This period also included stints as mine geologist for Rondebult Colliery, and for Avmin at Forzando Colliery and confirmation drilling for the Dorstfontein Colliery portal.
He was Country Manager SA and Angola and later Regional General Manager for Halliburton’s Landmark Graphics Corporation: Sub-Sahara Africa Region, based out of Nigeria. From November 2004 to February 2008 Dr Smuts was the editor of African Mining and Mining Mirror magazines. From 2006 to 2009 Willem was chairperson of the Africa Mining Congress held annually in Johannesburg and he is a regular invited speaker at international meetings and symposia. Willem also teach mining-related short courses to public and private classes in South Africa, UK, Europe and Canada. He is the President and CEO of Pangolin Diamonds Corp. a junior explorer with projects in Botswana. He has served as a director of LMK Resources (Nigeria) Ltd and currently serves on the board of a Canadian company and two South African companies. From 2008 to mid-2009 he was Exploration Manager for a large acreage CBM project in Botswana. Willem is currently consulting on an ongoing CBM exploration program in Zimbabwe.
Willem independently consults on CBM, coal, base and precious metals exploration globally and was involved in the development of Inside Mining, a new mining monthly focused on Africa and a global mining news website, www.miningne.ws. He still writes for Inside Mining as contributing editor.
